Big Meal Sushi

Located at Kennedy and McNicoll, Big Meal has taken over Nikada Sushi Robata. Big Meal also serves sushi. Bento boxes for lunch and all-you-can-eat for dinner. We visited at dinnertime.

I wish every meal could start with green tea and miso soup!
Appetizers of octopus ball (mostly breading), baked scallop? (delicious!), and chicken pieces ("just okay"), and clam (good)!

Shrimp tempura! Funny thing about the shrimp, we originally ordered four. Then we ate them all, so we ordered six more. Maybe half an hour later when no shrimp had arrived, we inquired and then said we wanted four. We waited and waited and waited and with no shrimp we stopped a server and told them we were still waiting for our four pieces of shrimp tempura. Then maybe ten minutes later a giant pile of shrimp tempura was brought to our table. Sheesh! We only wanted four!
An assortment of sashimi. I am not a sashimi expert but this was good.
Seaweed salad!
Sushi! Not spectacular, but pretty yummy!
Deepfried tofu. The fishy skin (?) flutters on top due to the heat of the tofu. It was a little bit disconcerting but I ate it anyways.
I'm not sure if you can tell, but the first orange juice is Tropicana. Kangdi was excited when he took a sip and it was delicious, fresh-tasting orange juice. So, he ordered another one. Except, the second glass of juice he ordered was a cheap, sugary, from concentrate orange punch. Disappointing.

Dessert: Japanese cake (very squishy), sesame ice-cream ("okay"), and mango pudding (sweet!).

Overall, these were the major factors when I was considering how to rate Big Meal:
o the shrimp tempura fiasco and the orange juice conundrum
o the slow service
o the somewhat expensive price ($21 for dinner)
o satisfactory to good food

As well, this restaurant just opened two weeks ago, and when I visited they hadn't yet set up their credit and debit machines so Big Meal is currently Cash Only.

I'm going to give ** and a half / ****. The quality of food and service doesn't quite match the expensive price. But I'm definitely willing to give it another try!

  1. Finally, a review of this place. I live in the nearby condo but I never had the courage to try this place out.

  3. I went a couple of weeks after they opened, and had a completely different experience! My dinner review is at http://maciee.tumblr.com/post/11538180282, and my lunch review is at http://maciee.tumblr.com/post/11622275090.

I didn't think the food was bad. Not at all! I just didn't like the service and thought it was a little expensive. :)

  5. This is the worst sushi experience ive ever had. Went there for lunch and they ran out of salmon. Not only did they not tell us that there was no salmon thy served us the rolls missi. The salmon. When asked to substitue the salmon she explined to is that they are saving the salmon for dinner. Service was slow and dishes came out one at a time. Worst experience at an all you can eat ever. Will be suprised if this place lasts more than a year

  6. WORST SUSHI EXPERIENCE EVER!
    The service was absolutely horrible.
We ordered three sheets worth of sushi and only got a few items. And it took forever to get those few items. We waited 30 minutes for a period of time in which case they forgot 75 percent of our order by at that point we just wanted to leave. The waitress was unprofessional and was too busy texting and sitting/chatting with her friends and going out for smoke breaks. It took us 20 minutes to get soy sauce. The food wasn't even that good and when we finally paid, they offered us "a few" eel we ordered when we sat down originally. But wth? we paid and got our coats on and 2 hours later theyre bringing us our food? Worst experience ever. Never going back.
