As I mentioned before, Lucky's was my introduction to hakka-style food. After a long week at Cedarbrae, friends and I would often head to Lucky's for dinner. With Bollywood movies playing on overhead screens, Chinese paintings on the wall, and tables set as if in someone's dining room, Lucky's is an interesting place.
And I've always said, nothing brings the cultures together like hakka. When I went to Lucky's this past Saturday, tables were filled with families, couples, friends and parties of all nationalities. With the sheer number of hakka restaurants in Scarborough, I might even go so far as to call it Scarborough's regional cuisine.
If you don't believe me, visit a hakka establishment and look around at the people dining.
And in my opinion, Lucky Chinese Restaurant is the best. (But I'm open to any recommendations of other/better places!)
Deciding to not partake in the Indian movies and the hustle and bustle of Saturday diners, Kangdi and I ordered our food to go. We did wait an incredibly long time for our dinner, so I would suggest calling in advance and going to pick up. Lucky's is a popular place.
And with good reason! The food is delicious! We ordered vegetable Cantonese chow mein (left), chilli chicken (right), vegetable pakoras (lower), and hot and sour soup (in second photo). The food was extremely greasy, but extremely tasty.
The pakoras had the right amount of spice and the right amount of spiciness. The noodles were too greasy and they didn't have enough vegetables, but I still enjoyed them thoroughly.
Kangdi liked the soup and the chilli chicken. Our four dishes came to about $30.
If you'd like to look at more of the food, here's a menu. Their number, to order in advance, is 416-431-0383.
It should be noted that there are actually two Lucky's locations. There's the one I visited, at Lawrence and Scarborough Golf Club, but there's also a location at Lawrence and Midland. I went to this other Lucky's and didn't like it as much, but that was a while ago.
All and all, I'd give Lucky's *** and a half / ****. One can always improve, right?
I would love to try all the hakka restaurants in Scarborough. Any suggestions?
federicks at Bellamy and ellesmere! I think it might be under new ownership so it's not as good as it used to be, but for me it's the original hakka in Scarborough.

ReplyDeleteI went to Federick's before (and blogged about it, too) but I really didn't think it was better than Lucky's.
