This all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant, located at 1883 McNicoll Ave near Kennedy and McNicoll, has been receiving a lot of negative Internet attention. On a trip home last weekend, I went here for lunch. And to be honest, I didn't really see the problems all the critics kept listing.
Yes, like most AYCE places, the dishes are filled with too much rice.
Yes, the servers do wear movement restricting outfits, which may slow the speed at which you receive your food.
Yes, I never went to Nikada prior to it becoming AYCE so I can't compare the current quality to before the owners made the switch.
But, I thoroughly enjoyed my food and didn't really have any complaints. The dining room was stylish and roomy with an the sushi chefs "cooking" behind a counter. Plus, the bathroom was stylish and clean. I always say you can check the true quality of a place by how they keep their washrooms.
I was really jonesing for a salad and this hit the spot. I just love Japanese-style salad dressings.
You can't eat sushi without green tea and miso soup. Nothing spectacular about either of these, but I finished them in no time at all.
Close-up of the soup (which had no tofu in it; is this normal?) and a spicy salmon hand roll in the background. I just decided to start eating fish again (for my health) and I have to say this roll was delicious!
I don't quite remember the name of these pretty salmon sushi rolls, but they do look like roses.
An array of the other sushi rolls we ordered. I really like spicy salmon, I have discovered. The cucumber and avocado rolls were very good, as well. I've eaten many avocado and cucumber rolls in my life and these stood out as some of the freshest.
Here are some of cooked dishes. I ordered the barbecue vegetables, which were very tasty. Obviously barbecuing vegetables is an easy task, but the light drizzle of sauce on top made these veggies superb. I even ordered two more skewers!
Our server forgot to tell us that lunch also included seaweed salad and shrimp tempura. I didn't capture the shrimp but here's the salad. Both were quite good. Though, the salad was pretty salty.
I'm sure I missed a few other dishes, along with our small bowls of green tea ice-cream, but when you're enjoying your food, you forget!
Note: No sashimi during lunch.
Overall, I would say that the food at Nikada isn't spectacular but it isn't a disappointment either. I'd go again. The overall damage was around $33 for two people for lunch, after tip and tax. I'll give a *** / ****.
