A Tale of Two Breakfasts: Best Friends Chinese Seafood Restaurant (Part I)

Being in a biracial relationship, sometimes there are some conflicts. While food is actually pretty easy for both me and my boyfriend as we both like many different styles of cooking, breakfast can cause problems.

I'm white. I like eggs, toast, cereal, muffins, fruit, juice, French toast, pancakes, and these sorts of things for breakfast. My boyfriend is Chinese. He likes leftover meat, vegetable dishes, congee, fried rice, Chinese buns, seafood, and these sorts of things for breakfast.

We clash.

When we're complaining in the kitchen over what to eat, it's nice and simple to just head to a restaurant.

Today, I wanted scrambled eggs and toast. But Kangdi was jonesing for meat and fried rice. So, we went out to avoid hassle.

Dim Sum @ Best Friends Chinese Seafood Restaurant!

The chicken feet were the first to arrive. Not a fan, but Kangdi ate them up.

These are the steamed shrimp rice rolls, I believe. They were actually much better than they look! If you look here you'll see that steamed shrimp rice rolls never really look all that appetizing. But they were yummy. Believe me.

The rice congee with fried fritter reminded me so much of my trip to China. I haven't seen those fried fritters since last summer! Very delicious. But, I'm sure they are very fattening, as well.

(Congee is sort of a rice pudding. It's made by boiling down cooked rice.)

This is a look inside a deepfried shrimp roll. The outside is a layer of tofu. Again this was very fattening, but so tasty!

These three dishes are: steamed tofu with shrimp (left), steamed pork dumplings (top), and steamed shrimp dumplings (right).

The shrimp dumplings were excellent! I judge a dim sum place by its shrimp dumplings and its egg tarts. So, Best Friends is looking pretty good.

And these would be the egg tarts. They were not the greatest egg tarts I've ever eaten, but they were very good. And course, egg tarts are best eaten with sips of tea between each bite. Om, nom, nom.

We were stupid enough to try and go for dim sum at noon on a Sunday. The wait wasn't too long (maybe 15 minutes) but the entrance to the restaurant was very crowded.

In fact, Best Friends was actually not even our first choice. We tried to go to Perfect (on Sheppard, near Brimley), but the line was out the door.

I definitely enjoyed my meal at Best Friends, though. No carts, but the food was very tasty and pretty cheap, as well. All that for under $20! (Most dishes cost $1.90 on weekends and holidays.)

Plus, I know Perfect is a little dirtier with less style on the inside.

I give Best Friends Chinese Seafood Restaurant *** and a half/****.

(Located on Sheppard, in between McCowan and Markham.)
