If you don't know what it is, it's a pay-per-view event where there are several matches between fighters. The participants are trained in mixed martial arts. There are no gloves and very few rules. Basically, the only way to stop a fight is through a submission, unconsciousness, blows to the back, or blood in the eyes. Gruesome, no? But I can't help but like it!
If there are no tap outs, or knock outs, the winner of the three rounds will be determined by the judges. You can watch it at home for about $80 or you can go to a bar who's showing it. I think there are about two or three UFC events a month.
There are three places in Scarborough to which I've gone to watch UFC. I'm going to rate them according to UFC experience, food, service, and atmosphere.
1. Bar10der (Located on Sheppard near Brimley.)
-UFC Experience: They obviously buy the home version of UFC and not the public version. There's a tickertape at the bottom stating that this broadcast cannot be shown in public venues. So counterfeit... Too Scarborough... And the last couple of times I've gone, the projector kept overheating, rendering the large screen pretty much useless. It was also really annoying how it kept turning off and on.
-Food: Regular. Simple, and nothing too special.
-Service: Friendly servers, but it's a small place and often not very accomodating.
-Atmosphere: It's a cozy atmosphere. You'll probably get a seat fifteen minutes before the show.
2. St. Louis Bar and Grill (Located at 55 Town Centre Court. Across from the Scarborough YMCA, which is beside Scarborough Town Centre.)
-UFC Experience: I found that some seats were very awkwardly placed in front of the televisions. But I haven't often had a bad experience with watching the fight itself. Tonight, it was busy so we sat on the patio. We could see three big screen tvs so it was fine. Except the sound kept disappearing. It was annoying but not the biggest of deals.
-Food: Today, Kangdi and I ordered drinks...
A beer and girly cocktail--a Schnapp Dragon. The beer was just a cold beer and the cocktail was very sweet and delicious.
Generally, I find St. Louis food more creative than other bars, but only really a step up from mediocre. I ordered a Goat Cheese Veggie Wrap. It was tastier than the one from Wild Wing but it was far too saucy. I couldn't eat the entire wrap because of its abundance of sauce. But there were good flavours and ingredients in it.
Kangdi ordered chicken wings. Kangdi says, "Eh, they're regular. I think Wild Wing is the best, then Kelsey's, then St. Louis, then Markham Station." Kangdi has spoken.
Kangdi then bought this drink. But when it arrived looking all blue and pretty, he promptly gave it to me and ordered a rum and coke. It's some kind of berry combination. It was pretty tasty. I liked the Schapp Dragon better, though.
-Service: Their servers aren't extra, extra nice, but only because they are always so busy. They deliver your food in a timely manner and are always around to answer questions and take orders, though.
-Atmosphere: It's a big place with lots of people so the energy levels are always high. If you want a table for more than two or three people, your best bet is to come at least an hour early. It becomes very busy close to game time.
3. Three Monkeys (Located on Warden, in between Highway 401 and Ellesmere.)
-UFC Experience: I've only watched UFC at Three Monkeys once. I had absolutely no problems watching the matches, but the televisions were a little small.
-Food: Average to good bar food. Similar to St. Louis but not as creative of a menu.
-Service: Not memorably bad, but not memorably good. Not overly nice and accomodating. We were left to find our own extra chairs.
-Atmosphere: It feels too much like a bar. The clientele is a little older, and-- I'm not going to lie--a little trashier.
Conclusion:
St. Louis is probably the best place to go. I'd give this bar and grill: ***/*****. (Kangdi's been helping me with this and he decided it was best to rate St. Louis out of five.)
Anyone else out there watch UFC?
